Shut your mouth and play

August 11, 2010

I want to start by saying I’ve been really impressed with Brandon Phillips this season.  He has shown that he is an all around team player.  He has done what has been best for the team by moving to the lead-off spot in the line-up, he has hustled, and listened and learned from veterans like Scott Rolen…for the most part.

In the end Brandon Phillips looks like a fool. AP

BP’s words Tuesday calling the Cardinals a bunch of “babies” were out of line.  Saying he hates the Cardinals, I get that, Joey Votto hates the Cubs, that is good, it motivates guys to step it up a notch when that team comes to town, but what BP said crossed the line to a personal attack against every single individual on that team and gave them some motivation to beat the Reds.

When Yadier Molina started mouthing off to BP and the benches cleared that should have lit a fire.  And it did, for Molina.  He had a great game and he backed up his smack talk to Phillips, in his first at-bat he belted a home-run…just for good measure. BP was a measly 1 for 5 and he left 3 guys on base.

I’m not defending Molina, but BP needs to shut his mouth and play.  It seemed to be working just fine until Tuesday night.  I’m not the only one who thinks that too.
